2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you can service the valve, remove the Cylinder Head. Use the Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772-A and adapter 6716A to get the valve springs into a tight position before removing the valve retaining locks, valve spring retainers, valve stem seals and valve springs. Prior to removing the valves, clear any burrs on the stem lock grooves, so as not to damage the valve guides and check which valves you have. Clean every valve well and throw away those that are damaged from burning, warping or cracking. Using a good guide cleaner, remove carbon and varnish from the inside of the valve guides. Check the valve stems for excessive wear; replace the valve if the worn space is no less than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Add lubricating oil to the valve stems and then fit them into the cylinder head. After having the valves or seats reground, check the stem height and replace the head if the valve is excessively long. Fit a new seal to each valve guide and then put in the valve springs and valve retainers. Compress the valve springs using MD-998772-A along with 6716A, put on the locks afterward and remove MD-998772-A. In the event that the valves or seats are ground, the height of installed springs should be measured from the surface of the spring seat in the cylinder head to the bottom of the spring retainer or, if spacers are installed, from the top of the spacer. If the spring excesses the safe range due to height, fit a 1.587 mm (1/16 in.) spacer in the head counterbore to adjust the height to the approved range of 41.27 to 42.86 mm (1-5/8 to 1-11/16 in.). Lastly, replace the original Cylinder Head.
