2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty or Damaged Air Bag on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before you change a damaged driver air bag, turn off the air bag system by removing and keeping the battery negative cable disconnected for two minutes. Since there may be irritants from the cushion and surfaces inside, you should always wear a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and eye protection before you remove an air bag. Begin by taking out the two screws on the underside of the steering wheel that keep the driver air bag attached to the armature. Pull the driver air bag away from the steering wheel so you can see the two wire harness connectors at the back. Remove the pigtail wire connector between the Clock Spring horn switch and connect it to the horn switch feed, then take the pigtail air bag wire from the Clock Spring driver and carefully release it from the air bag inflator connector receptacle. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel. After the air bag has gone off, it is necessary to replace the Clock Spring and steering column too. Install the trim cover onto the air bag housing before plugging the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire harness into the air bag inflator connector receptacle, so that you can easily notice a clear click when they are linked. Link the back of the driver air bag's horn switch feed pigtail wire connector to the Clock Spring horn switch pigtail wire harness connector. Place the air bag under the steering wheel and make sure the Clock Spring pigtail wires are not squeezed. Go to the back of the steering wheel and use the two screws to secure the driver's air bag to the armature at 10.2 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Make sure you do not attach the negative cable from the battery to the air bag unit until the air bag systems verification is done following any work on these components.
