2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Shut down the air bag system by isolating the battery negative cable before taking out the combination switch after two minutes, giving the air bag capacitor enough time to release its power. Loosen the lever from the tilt steering column by turning it in the opposite way to the arrow. Unscrew the two screws around the top of the outer shrouds and press each side of the shrouds to pop open the snapping features before lifting off the upper outer shroud. After that, take out the center screw on the lower outer shroud and take it off the steering column housing. With two screws in hand, release the gearshift lever side of the inner shrouds by pushing them inward and after both shrouds are clear, get rid of the lower inner shroud. Turn the shroud of the upper inner section upwards to get to the multi-function switch screws, then remove the tamper proof screws with a Snap ON tamper proof Torx bit TTXR2OB2 or comparable tool. Pull the multi-function switch gently away from the steering column to take out and remove the screw that holds the wire harness connector, then unplug it from the switch. Attach the multi-function switch to a spot beside the steering column and secure the instrument panel wire harness again, tightening the securing screw to 18 in. lbs. With the steering column's front facing toward you, add the multi-function switch above the steering wheel, lift the inside cover to get to the mounting screws and tighten both tamper proof screws using a TIXR20B2 or similar Snap ON tamper proof Torx bit to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Slide the lever hider strip for the shifter into the channel under the steering wheel, fit the lower inner shroud on and attach the upper and lower shrouds until they are secure. Insert the two screws into the lower inner shroud and the upper inner shroud and tighten them both to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Set the lower outer shroud onto the steering column, install and lock the center screw at 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.) and complete the shroud assembly by clicking the top and bottom together. Then, attach the last two screws fastening the outer shroud to the upper outer shroud by hand, remove the lever from the tilt steering column adjuster if present and hook the negative battery cable back up.
