2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can a Dimmer Switch Enhance Safety When Servicing Airbag-Equipped Components on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: To begin, if the vehicle is equipped with S Sport steering, steering column, or instrument panel, you must disable the airbag system by disconnecting the battery's negative cable and waiting two minutes to ensure the airbag does not deploy accidentally. First, take off the negative battery cable before removing the combination switch. If suitable, remove the lever from the tilt steering column with counterclockwise motions. Remove the two screws on the upper shroud with a wrench, press inward on the outer shrouds to separate them and pull the upper outer shroud off. Then, pull out the screw in the center of the lower outer shroud and remove the lower outer shroud. After taking the two inner shroud screws off the steering column housing, gently press in the gearshift lever side of the inner shrouds to detach the bottom one. Tilt up the upper inner shroud to expose the multi-function switch screws and remove them with a Snap ON tamper proof Torx bit TTXR2OB2. Pull the multi-function switch gently off the steering column so you can take out the screw holding the instrument panel wire harness connector. After that, remove the connector from the switch and also remove the multi-function switch. With the multi-function switch attached next to the steering column, link up the instrument panel wire harness connector and screw it down to 18 in. lbs. Place the multi-function switch on the steering column and raise the upper inner shroud to see the mounting screws and fasten and tighten the two password protected screws to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Set the lower inner shroud around the steering column, checking that the hider strip for the gearshift lever is in position and snap the upper and lower shroud parts together. Attach and tighten the inner shroud-to-column screws to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Place the lower outer shroud over the steering column and set the center screw to attach it to the housing, turning it until it reads 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). Put the outer shrouds together by snapping the upper outer shroud onto the lower outer shroud and use two outboard screws to pin the lower outer shroud onto the upper outer shroud, tightening the screws to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). After that, slot the lever into the tilt steering column and turn it clockwise, finishing by reconnecting the negative battery cable.
