2001 Jeep Cherokee Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before working on the combination switch, disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable to stop the air bag system, then wait two minutes as the air bag system capacitor discharges. Take the knee blocker out of the instrument panel before taking away the three screws securing the lower steering column shroud to the upper shroud. With the standard column, unscrew the two nuts on the upper steering column; for tilt columns, move the steering wheel down to its lowest point. Take away the upper shroud, the lower shroud and the three screws found on the multi-function switch water shield and bracket and below the switch control on the steering wheel. Gently lift away the tab at the bottom of the water shield bracket from the steering column, freeing up the screw boss. After that, remove the water shield and bracket together with the left multi-function switch to access the two wires you need to connect. Cut off the connectors and get rid of the left multi-function switch and water shield combined, carefully separating the water shield from the switch. Put the water shield onto the switch, place the left multi-function switch and water shield close to their bolts and secure the two instrument panel wire harness connectors. Position the switch on the left so that it sits correctly on its mounts, while lifting the tilt release lever if the steering column can tilt. Secure the lower mounting tab of the multi-function switch water shield bracket on the steering column and fix the screw below the control system's left switch to 1.1 Nm (10 in.lbs.), then install and tighten the top bracket screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in.lbs.). Place the upper and lower shrouds over the steering column, mount the three lower shroud screws into the upper shroud to a torque of 2 Nm and tighten the two nuts that attach the non-tilt steering column upper mounting bracket to the dash panel steering column support bracket studs to 22 Nm if they are present. After that, install the knee blocker back onto the instrument panel and hook up the battery's negative cable.
