2001 Jeep Cherokee Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Timing Cover on 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before touching anything on the timing cover, disconnect the negative battery cable, after which you should remove the vibration damper, fan, hub assembly and shroud. Detach the accessory drive brackets from the timing case cover and, if your car has one, the compressor and the generator bracket from the top of the engine, all to one side. Take out the bolts that hold the oil pan-to-timing case cover and timing case cover to the cylinder block and then remove the timing case cover along with the gasket. Take the crankshaft oil seal out of the front area of the timing cover. Before installing anything, clean the surfaces of the gasket on your timing case cover, oil pan and cylinder block with proper solvent. With the open end inside the timing case, solve the new crankshaft oil seal with Seal Installation Tool 6139 to keep it in place and level as you connect it. Install the gasket on the cylinder block, then set the timing case cover onto the oil pan gasket and the cylinder block. Put in the Alignment and Seal installation Tool 6139 through the crankshaft opening and screw both the timing case cover and oil pan into position. Apply 7 Nm (60 in. lbs.) to each 1/4 inch cover-to-block bolt, 22 Nm (192 in. lbs.) to every 5/16 inch front cover-to-block bolt and 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.) to all oil pan-to-cover 1/4 inch bolts. Get rid of the cover alignment tool, apply a bit of engine oil to the hub portion of the seal where it meets the vibration damper and add Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the keyway in the crankshaft before attaching the key. Having placed the key, the vibration damper should go next and if the car has an air conditioner or generator, fit the compressor and bracket assembly afterward. When you're done, attach the engine fan, hub assembly, shroud and serpentine drive belt. Remember to attach the negative battery cable last.
