2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Battery Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How Are Battery Cables Maintained in a Wire Harness on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Both the negative and positive cables from the battery are within the wire harness, so if either is faulty, the unit must be replaced. First, turn the ignition switch to OFF and switch off all electrical equipment you might have. Relax the battery negative cable clamp bolt by turning it counterclockwise and remove the terminal clamp from the negative post on the battery. Connect all wires as before for the battery positive terminal. Remove the cover on the PDC, unscrew the nuts connecting the two cables to the (B+) terminal studs and take out the cables. Separate the battery wire harness connector from the headlamp at the passenger side and the other connector from the dash wire harness near the front of the battery. Remove the screw at the negative battery cable eyelet terminal and the fender shield, release the cover of the generator output terminal stud housing and take out the nut securing the generator's output cable eyelet terminal. Loosen the screw attaching the negative cable eyelet terminal from the block and take out the battery wire connector from the receptacle under the generator field terminal. Take out the nut connecting the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) terminal stud on the starter solenoid and pull out the battery wire harness connector from the starter solenoid. Remove the battery wire harness from under the hood which disconnects the battery. While installing, inspect the battery terminal clamps, check that the posts are clean, install the battery wire harness in the engine compartment and hook the connector back to the starter solenoid. Place the end of the positive battery cable onto the B(+) stud on the starter solenoid, then tighten with a nut using 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Attach the battery negative cable ground eyelet terminal to the engine block with a screw tightened to 10.2 Nm, reattach the battery wire harness connector to the generator field terminal connector and install the generator output cable eyelet terminal onto the generator output terminal stud, making the nut 10.7 Nm tight. Snap the part for the generator output stud in place and make sure it is level. After that, connect the battery negative cable to the inner fender shield by tightening the screws to 250 in. lbs. After that, put the battery wire harness connector on the left headlamp and right dash wire harness connector, screw in the positive battery and generator output cable's eyelet terminal onto the PDC B(+). Close and lock the PDC cover, plug the positive battery cable into the battery's positive post and tighten the terminal clamp pinch-bolt hex nut to 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.). Finally, hook the battery negative cable terminal clamp onto the battery negative terminal post and tighten its bolt to 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.), followed by applying a small amount of petroleum jelly or chassis grease to the open surfaces of the battery cable clamps and battery terminal posts.
