2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Starter Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you begin any service or repair, first remove the negative battery cable and make sure to lift and support the entire vehicle. With the starter motor held up, take out the upper mounting screw. Lower the starter motor to a level where you can take out the nut connecting the battery cable eyelet to the solenoid battery terminal, so the starter isn't hanging from the wire harness. Take the battery cable eyelet away from the solenoid battery terminal and remove the starter solenoid terminal wire harness connector. When the old starter motor is out of the engine compartment, install the new starter and link the solenoid terminal wire harness connector. Install the battery cable eyelet to the solenoid battery terminal and tighten the nut to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.), so the starter motor is not affected during installation. Move the starter motor to the front of the automatic transmission torque converter housing and place both mounting screws in, but leave them loose. Tighten both mounting screws on the bottom to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and those on the top to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). After that, lower your car and attach the battery negative cable again.
