2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before beginning the service or repair, lift the vehicle, coat all bolts and nuts with heat valve lubricant and let them penetrate for 5 minutes. Eliminate the fasteners connecting the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe flange, loosen the clamp that ties the catalytic converter to the muffler and separate the wiring from the oxygen sensor. Hold a torch to the catalytic converter to muffler connection until the metal is cherry red and while it's hot, twist the catalytic converter to pull it away from the exhaust pipe and muffler. Look for any deformity or deformation in the stainless steel casing of your converter; check the attached heat shield as well. If you believe there is internal damage to the catalyst, tapping the catalyst's bottom with a rubber mallet might show a broken central core. Attach the catalytic converter to the edge of the exhaust pipe flange and tighten the bolts until the torque reading is 28Nm (250 inch lbs.). Connect the muffler to the catalytic converter so the alignment tab goes into the alignment slot and secure the exhaust clamp between them after tightening the clamp nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque. Attach the oxygen sensor cables, complete the lowered vehicle and then turn on the engine to look for leaks and double check there is no exposure between the exhaust system and body panels.
