2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Muffler on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you begin work on the muffler, lift the vehicle first. Apply heat valve lubricant to the bolts and nuts and give them time to break down any rust for 5 minutes. With the exhaust clamp loosened at the catalytic converter to muffler junction, light the connection with a torch until it is cherry red. After the metal is still cherry red, take off the tailpipe/muffler assembly from the converter and then remove the tailpipe from its bracket. If the tailpipe hanger assembly was removed, fit it in place on the vehicle's frame and tighten all the bolts to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.) torque. First, set the tailpipe and muffler on the tailpipe hanger, then install the muffler to the catalytic converter and make sure the tailpipe doesn't touch the floor pan. Instal the exhaust clamp and tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). lastly, bring the car down from the mounts, fire up the motor and examine the overall exhaust system for leaks or rubbing against the car body and fix the angle if required.
