2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing or repairing the power steering pump, turn off the engine and look at the fluid level to ensure your safety. Fill your power steering system with Mopar Power Steering Fluid or an alternative and make sure not to use automatic transmission fluid and avoid overfilling. Make sure to clean the cap on top and check the oil level when the car is running at normal ambient temperature-the indicator should show Cold. Pour the pump fluid into the reservoir up to the right line and wait for two minutes before starting anything. Run your engine for a few seconds and then switch it off again. Keep checking and topping up the fluid as needed and run the engine until the fluid is correct. Lift up the vehicle's front end, turn the steering wheel to the right and left gently, touching the stops 20 times. Make sure the fluid is not low and add fluid if it is. Set the car on a low position, start the power and rotate the steering wheel all the way from one lock to the other. Turn off the engine and check how much fluid is present; refill if it needs more. Should the fluid become very foamy or milky, let the car rest for a bit and do the test again. Do not let your vehicle run with foamy fluid for too long, because this could harm the pump.
