2001 Jeep Wrangler Battery Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain Battery Cables on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: When servicing the battery cables, make sure the ignition is off and every electrical accessory should be turned off. Release the negative cable terminal clamp pinch-bolt hex nut and remove the negative cable from its post, pulling it off using a battery terminal puller as needed. Perform this same process for the battery positive cable. Take the B(+) terminal stud cover off the back of the PDC, remove the nuts that are attaching the battery and generator cables and then detach both cables. Detach the negative battery cable eyelet terminal from the dash panel, the cable from the generator output terminal stud and the ground connection from the engine block stud. In addition, detach the battery positive cable eyelet terminal from the B(+) terminal stud on the starter solenoid and remove the battery wire harness from within the engine compartment. As you install, first wipe and inspect the clamps and posts at the battery cable terminals and then route the battery wire harness back where it belongs. Put the end of the positive battery cable onto the B(+) terminal on the starter solenoid and secure it with a nut that you tighten to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Secure the eyelet terminal of the battery's negative cable to the engine block stud and fasten it with a nut tightened to 16.9 Nm (150 in. lbs.). After that, join the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal, tightening the attaching nut to 8.4 Nm (75 in. lbs.). Tighten the screw on the battery negative cable eyelet to 48.7 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) after fitting the generator output cover onto the terminal stud housing. Fit the battery positive cable terminal and generator eyelet terminal onto the PDC B(+) studs and tighten the two nuts by hand to ensure they move smoothly until they reach 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Screw the stud cover onto the terminal stud on the B(+) side and reconnect the battery positive and negative cables to their respective battery studs, making sure both pinch-bolt hex nuts are tightened to 8.4 Nm (75 in. lbs.). In the end, put a little petroleum jelly or grease onto the standing edges of the battery cable terminal clamps and battery terminal posts.
