Q: How to Remove and Install Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves with the Cylinder Head Still on the Engine Block on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before you can access the valve springs with the engine cylinder head on, first remove the head cover, unscrew the cap screws, remove the bridge-pivot units and take off the rocker arms. Do not alter how any of the push rods, bridges, pivots or rocker arms are originally placed. If valve springs are suspected, spot any damage to the springs and retainer and remove any spark plug located next to the valve springs. Put an adaptor for a 14 mm air hose into the spark plug hole, attach an air hose and pressurize it with 621 kPa to maintain the valves and seats in contact. First, knock the retainer or tip gently with a rawhide hammer to release the lock, then use MD-998772A to compress the spring, take out the locks, the valve spring, the retainer and finally both intake and exhaust valve oil seals (marked INT and EXH). To take out the valves, press the valve springs with a MD-998772A compressor and use adapter 6716A, then remove the valve retaining locks, valve spring retainers, valve stem seals and valves. Be sure to clean out the grooves where the valve stem locks are located. Check the valve stem for damage and then clean any nicks with an Arkansas smooth stone while installing it. Put the oil seals in place and see that they remain seated on the valve guide boss, then secure the valve spring and retainer. Grab the Valve Spring Compressor MD-998772A to fit the valve spring tightly, insert the valve locks, release it and make sure the valve is sitting properly. Get rid of the air pressure inside the cylinder, take off the air hose and then put the spark plug back. Work through each remaining valve spring the same, fit the push rods so they center in the hydraulic valve tappet, set the rocker arms, pivots and bridge in place, then tighten the bridge cap screws to a torque of 28 Nm. Install the engine cylinder head cover next. Make sure you put lubrication oil on the valve stems, then insert the valves into the cylinder head, checking the valve height if they or the seats have been reground. You should replace the cylinder head if the valve is longer than it should be. After that, place new seals in the valve guides, next the valve springs and finish with the retainers. Use Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772A and adapter 6716A to hold down the springs, lock them in place, release the tool and measure how high the springs are installed. Should the spring height be more than 42.86 mm, add a 1.587 mm spacer in the head counterbore to make the height 41.27-42.86 mm.
