2001 Jeep Wrangler Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Lash Adjuster on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The first step to service and fix the lifter and lash adjuster is to remove the engine cylinder head cover and then the bridge assemblies, pivot assemblies and rocker arms by relaxing the capscrews one turn at a time. After that, pull the push rods out and remove the tappets via the openings in the cylinder head using a tappet removal tool. Use cleaning solvent to clean the tappet assemblies and remove deposits of varnish, gum and sludge, then inspect the sides and the bases of the tappet bodies for damage, checking each tappet base with a straightedge; if concave wear is present, replace the camshaft and faulty tappets. Installation requires taking each tappet, dipping it in Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or its equal and then inserting it into place in the bore with the Hydraulic Valve Tappet Removal/Installation Tool. In the end, insert the push rods in their initial spots and attach the rocker arms and bridge and pivot assemblies, still without securing the capscrews at the bridges. Gradually wind each capscrew, only one at a time, until the torque is 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) to ensure the bridges are not damaged and you can then replace the engine cylinder head cover.
