2001 Jeep Wrangler Release Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Release Bearing on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing or repairing the clutch release bearing, first remove the transmission. Separate the release bearing from the release lever and take out the bearing. Check the bearing slide surface on the front transmission retainer; if scoring, wear or cracking is noticed, put in a replacement. Be sure the release fork pivot fits firmly and is well and that the fork is not twisted or worn; change the retainer spring if it's deformed or no longer the right shape. When installing, put grease on a long, thin screwdriver with a small blade, then push it through the clutch disc hub to reach the crankshaft pilot bearing, putting the Mopar high temperature bearing grease on the screwdrivers end. Apply high temperature Mopar grease to the splines of the input shaft, inside the bearing retainer slide, the fork pivot and the surface on the release fork pivot before joining them. Attach the new release bearing to the release fork and make sure it is set right. After that, reinstall the transmission.
