2001 Jeep Wrangler Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Ensure you tighten the radiator draincock before any work on the thermostat, since opening it while the cooling system is hot and pressurized could be very dangerous. Empty the radiator's coolant until it is just below where the thermostat housing starts and save the clean coolant you remove. While replacing constant tension hose clamps, make sure to use the Snapon clamp tool (HPC20) when the hose uses bigger clamps or use the company's special clamp tool (number 6094) and always wear safety glasses. Should you need to use new constant tension clamps, only pair them with ones that feature the same letters or numbers as the others. Release the radiator upper hose, heater hose and connector at the engine coolant temperature sensor at the thermostat housing and then unscrew the thermostat housing mounting bolts to remove the thermostat housing, gasket and thermostat, tossing away the old gasket. Before installing a new thermostat, take time to tightly clean both mating surfaces, with the side of the thermostat closest to the engine marked by a coil spring and the outer flange notched into place. Set the thermostat into the engine cylinder head, aligning its arrow and bleed hole with the recess groove and pointing up. Afterward, install the replacement gasket and housing on top. Tighten the thermostat housing evenly and make certain the thermostat is in place, with the correct bolt and nut torque of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Connect the hoses to the housing of the thermostat and the electrical connector to the sensor that measures coolant temperature. After that, shut the radiator draincock securely, add the coolant, turn on the engine and warm it up and examine the system for any leaks.
