2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, remove the majority of fluid from the reservoir, raise your vehicle and then take out the right front tire and wheel assembly. Unscrew the fascia holding screws in order to take out the drive-belt splash shield fastener. Remove the screws from the shield itself and also take out the shield. Then, take off the belt connecting the accessory, then remove the electrical connectors from the A/C compressor. After removing the four bolts connecting the A/C compressor to the engine, step the compressor in the center of the car. With a crowfoot wrench on a long extension, work the nut off the pump side of the pressure hose and put a shop towel between the crowfoot and the pump's pulley to keep the pulley safe. Lower the vehicle, then take the grille, hood-opening weather-strip and ambient temperature sensor out of the radiator closure panel. Open the panel that secures the radiator at the top and take it out, then lift up the cooling module where it is attached underneath and move it to the left side across the car. The side bolts on the left are what you should remove for access to more room. Secure the cooling module to the front using a bungee cord and do not pull it too tight. Separate the clamp from the fitting where the supply hose is attached to the power steering pump and then eliminate the hose. Unscrew the three bolts on the pump and the two bolts holding the stamped steel bracket to the engine block and then push the pump and pulley forward to remove them. For installation, wipe the open power steering pressure hose end and the pump port with a lint-free towel, use fresh O-rings to replace the used ones and oil them with clean power steering fluid. Put the power steering pump and pulley into the mounting area and attach the steel support bracket to the back of the pump. Then install the three bolts through the bracket and pump into the engine cover without fastening them for now. After securing the bracket to the block,Fasten your engine bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and pump mounting bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.), then complete the process. Slide the fluid supply hose onto the pump supply fitting, stretch out the hose clamp and secure it over the hose and pump supply fitting, with the hose above the timing cover and away from any items that might hurt it. Lift the automobile again, then connect and screw the fluid pressure hose at the pump with 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) as shown in Figure 14, using a crowfoot wrench on a long extension together with a torque wrench. Once you have installed the four bolts, tighten each to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.), then attach the connectors for the electrical system and put back the A/C drive belt. After that, reinstall the drive-belt splash shield and its fasteners, then begin screwing the front fascia into the reinforcement. Connect the right front wheel and tire again, tightening the nuts on the mount to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and then lower the vehicle. Unhook the bungee cord and set the cooling module onto its lower mounts, fit the right-side bolts back through the radiator panel if necessary and secure the closure panel there. Next, install the ambient temperature sensor, the hood-opening weather-strip and grille and perform the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation to fill the power steering system. Check afterward for any leaks.
