Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, drain as much fluid from the power steering container, next raise the car and remove the front right tire and wheel unit. Disconnect the screws that attach the front fascia to reach the drive-belt splash shield fastener screw and after that remove the drive-belt splash shield fasteners and the shield. After that, remove the accessory drive-belt from the A/C compressor and power steering pump and finally remove the electrical wires from the A/C compressor. Lift the compressor toward the center of the vehicle by taking out the four bolts fastening it to the engine. To remove the pressure hose, put a long crowfoot wrench on an extension and unscrew the tube nut from the pump pulley, with a shop towel between the tool and the pump. Raise the vehicle, then take out the grille, hood-opening weather-strip and ambient temperature sensor from the radiator closure panel. Unscrew the fasteners holding up the top of the radiator panel and then lift the cooling module out from its lower attachments, carefully moving it to the left while avoiding force. For a bit more room to work, the bolts that attach the lower radiator panel on the right can be undone. Connect the cooling module to the forward part of the hull using a bungee cord, but don't pull it too tightly. Open the clamp attached to the supply hose on the pump, then pull away the hose. Linotek came prepared and swiftly used the stamped steel mallet method. Before installing, clean the open ends of the power steering pressure hose and the pump port with a lint-free cloth and use new, clean, lubricated O-rings to replace those already in place. Install the power steering pump and pulley at its mount, place the bracket behind it and insert the three bolts through the bracket and pump into the threaded engine cover without tightening. Tighten the first two bolts on the bracket to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) followed by the three pump mounting bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Clamp the fluid supply hose onto the pump supply fitting, stretch the clamp over the hose and fitting and make sure the hose is routed above the cover where the engine timing chain sits. Raise the vehicle once more, slip the hose tube nut onto the pump and tighten it to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) with a crowfoot wrench using an extension and a torque wrench. Put the bolts through the A/C compressor mounts, tightening them to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.), add the A/C compressor electrical connections and loop the A/C drive belt back into place. After installing the drive-belt splash shield and all its fasteners, continue by screwing the front fascia to the reinforcement. Connect the right front tire and wheel to the car and tighten the wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.); next, lower the vehicle. Take the bungee cord from the lower radiator snap ring and put the cooling module into its lower brackets, adding back the right-side bolts for the lower radiator door if they were previously removed. Put in the radiator closure panel and secure it, attach the ambient temperature sensor, place the hood-opening weather-strip and fit the grille. Now, do the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation and inspect for signs of leaks.
