2002 Dodge Caravan Brake Disc Parts and Q&A
Q: Should Brake Discs Be Resurfaced with Every Brake Pad Replacement, and What Are the Guidelines on 2002 Dodge Caravan?
A: It is not required to reface the brake disc every time you replace the pads, but it is a good idea when the disc is deeply scored, has warped or there are comments about rough or pulsing brakes. For refacing, a hub-mounted on-car brake lathe is best, as it corrects runout issues by truing the disc to the vehicle's hub and bearing. A minimum allowable thickness is cast in an unmachined area on each disc and that number is included in the specification table. Disc thickness should be no lower than the minimum allowable threshold, because anything less might be dangerous. Check the surface of the brake disc and hub adapters for chips, rust or contamination before any installation. As you use the brake lathe, follow the steps from the manufacturer and turn both sides of the disc on the lathe so that the cut remains the same. It's necessary to operate disc turning equipment very carefully, as the refacing process calls for the required TIR and thickness variation limits to be maintained. The requirements for brake disc machining are found in the specification table.
