2002 Dodge Caravan Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Cable on 2002 Dodge Caravan?
A: Start off by supporting the vehicle on jackstands or a hoist in order to work on the parking brake cable. Release how far the parking brake lever is pressed and remove the intermediate and left rear park brake cable from the equalizer. Remove the front park cable housing retainer from the body outrigger bracket by using a 14 mm box wrench or an aircraft type hose clamp. Remove the car from the jack, take out the left front door sill molding and kick panel and you can access the park brake cable. Lift up the floor mat, then remove the cable from the floor pan, unplug the button from the clevis and hit out the end fitting from the bracket holding the cable inside the pedal assembly. Slide the retainer off the parking brake lever first and then drag the front parking brake assembly out by pulling it through the floor pan. On the intermediate cable, lock out the adjusting feature, disconnect the cable from the equalizer and release the nut holding the cable housing to the frame. Remove the intermediate cable by moving the fuel tank out of the way if it can. Remove the tire, brake drum, add tension to the cables, take the right rear cable off the intermediate connector and remove the retainer on the cable housing using a 14 mm wrench. Do the same steps for the left rear cable. When installing, run the cable for the front parking brake through the floor pan, attach the cable retainer onto the assembly bracket of the pedal and join the cable strand button to the clevis. Lock the seal along the floor pan and raise the car to feed the brake cable through the body outrigger bracket, then reset the automatic adjuster. Put the intermediate cable through the frame rails, lock it down with nuts and join it to the right rear brake cable. On the right and left rear cables, place them in the brake support plate, affix to the actuator lever and attach the housing retainers. After that, set-up the brake drums and wheel assemblies, let go of the front cable-locking pliers and push the park brake pedal to secure the cables.
