2002 Dodge Dakota Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Ensure Accurate Alignment for Your Drive Shaft on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Good way to check driveline alignment is to place the axles on stands and level the car while the wheels and shaft are able to rotate. Start by taking out all the snap rings on the exterior of the bearing to have a flat protractor base. Turn the shaft until the bearing on the transmission/transfer case output yoke is at the bottom. Whenever you measure, do so from front to rear and always measure on a single side. Lay the inclinometer on the yoke bearing parallel to the shaft, center its bubble in the sight glass and take the reading which will show the transmission or Output Yoke Angle. Turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees and bring the Inclinometer down on the yoke bearing, so the bubble is in the center and you see your reading on the Inclinometer. Take away the smaller figure from the larger to calculate the Transmission Output Operating Angle. First, turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees, position the Inclinometer on the pinion yoke bearing parallel to the shaft, center the bubble and note the measurement to discover the pinion shaft or Input Yoke Angle. Take away the smaller figure from the larger to get the axle Input Operating Angle. Allow for less than a 3° swivel angle, the continuous operating angle should be near 1/2 a degree and all operating angles should be under 1°. The same procedure is used to measure the propeller shaft angles for a two-piece shaft as for a one-piece shaft.
