2002 Dodge Dakota Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter for 3.9L/5.9L Engines on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Lift and support the vehicle, then apply plenty of Mopar Rust Penetrant to the bolts and nuts on the catalytic converter for 5 minutes. Loose the clamp holding the catalytic converter flange to the exhaust pipe and the clamp attaching the flange to the muffler or extension pipe. Remove the rear engine mount and the crossmember after that and then take out the catalytic converter which you may have to unfasten sections of the exhaust first. Look at the converter's stainless steel body for signs it has bulged or warped from overheating and also inspect the heat shield to ensure it is secured and not bent. Suspected internal damage can be found by lightly tapping the bottom of the catalyst with a rubber mallet. Disconnect all the oxygen sensor connectors when you are installing to ensure no damage occurs. Connect the catalytic converter flange to the exhaust pipe and then slide the whole unit into the muffler or extension pipe. For example, if the down-pipe was loose, tighten it by following the proper procedure. Clamp the flanges at the catalytic converter, tighten the nuts with a torque of 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Add the crossmember and rear motor mount back and then lower the vehicle, starting the engine to check for leaks and look for contact with body panels.
