2002 Dodge Neon Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Cylinder in a Drum Brake System on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: Start the wheel cylinder servicing or repair by holding the brake pedal with a brake pedal holder at the first inch so that the master cylinder is not influenced by the hydraulics. Lift the vehicle and take out the rear tire and wheel set. Disconnect the rear brake flex hose from the wheel cylinder and remove the rear brake drum. Use the brake shoes you've removed to determine whether they need to be washed of excess grease or fluid and then changed. After that, remove both the bolts and the brake wheel cylinder from the brake support plate. When the brake drums are taken off, examine the wheel cylinder boots for signs of leaks, rips or cracks and if they are present, check the wheel cylinders, clean any parts needed and put in replacement wheel cylinders as required. While installing the brake parts, first attaching a new O-ring to the brake assembly and wheel cylinder mating area and then ensure the wheel cylinder is set squarely over the assembly. Panel the wheel cylinder onto the brake support plate and tighten the bolts to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.). Attach the rear brake brake flex hose tube fitting to the wheel cylinder and then tighten the tube nut to 17 Nm following assembly. Attach the rear brake shoes to the brake support plate and replace them when needed, afterward steadying the rear brake drum on the rear hub. Fit the wheel assembly and tighten the mounting nuts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), after which, adjust the rear brakes. Loosen the vehicle, take out the brake pedal holder, flush any air in the wheel cylinder and drive around on the road to test its brakes.
