2002 Dodge Neon Brake Drum Parts and Q&A
Q: What Is the Proper Method for Machining and Installing a Deeply Scored or Warped Brake Drum on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: If brake drums have been deeply scored or warped, they may be fixed on a brake lathe specifically designed for this by reading the manufacturer's instructions. Take the brake drum diameter and measure it before machining; if machining will make the drum bigger than the permitted measurement, a new drum is needed. A maximum diameter mark appears on all brake drums and must be checked during machining, with feed cut fineness ensuring no screw effect takes place on the brake shoes upon braking. You should raise the car, remove the rear tire and wheel assembly, clip the retaining clips from the brakes (if equipped) and then remove the brake drum. If the drum does not ease out, release some brake clearance by twisting the adjusting screw upward on the brake automatic adjuster at the top of the brake support, after removing the rubber cover from above it with a screwdriver. Before mounting the drum, check the linings on the brake shoes for wear, how much they drift from their position and any contamination present. Install the rear brake drum onto the rear hub and bearing, put on the tire and wheel assembly and screw on the wheel mounting nuts until they show a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) After that, buy new rear brake shoes and lower the vehicle to the ground.
