2003 Dodge Neon Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair Wheel Cylinders in a Drum Brake System on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before you begin to service or repair wheel cylinders, use a brake pedal holder to push down the brake pedal just past its initial inch to stop the master cylinder from draining fluid. Lift the car and take the rear tire and wheel off. Separate the trailing brake hose from the wheel cylinder, remove the rear drum and its shoes and swap them if they are wet. After that, take off the bolts holding the brake wheel cylinder to the plate and remove the brake wheel cylinder from its spot on the brake support plate. Once the brake drums are not attached, look for damages in the wheel cylinder boots. Should any be found, remove the old wheel cylinders, clean them and install newer ones. Install the new O-ring between the wheel cylinder and the brake support plate, position the wheel cylinder straight and bolt the cylinder to the plate up to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.) of torque. Snap the end of the rear brake flex hose tube onto the wheel cylinder and fasten the tube nut until it reaches 17 Nm (about 145 in. lbs.) of torque. After changing the rear brake shoes, install them on the support plate and put the rear brake drum onto the rear hub. Mount the tire and wheel again, secure the wheels with the torque wrench set to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and adjust the rear brakes. Reduce the truck, take out the brake pedal holder, bleed the wheel cylinder where needed and use the vehicle to check its brakes for operation.
