2001 Dodge Neon Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Cylinder on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Ensure that the master cylinder won't operate by pressing the brake pedal halfway into the dashboard using a brake hold-down, then lift it so the brake hydraulic system is cut off. Lift the vehicle and take out the rear tire and wheel assembly. Take the rear brake flex hose off the wheel cylinder and remove the rear drum and its shoes from the support plate. Replace the parts if they are moist with grease or brake fluid. After that, take out the brake wheel cylinder attaching bolts and pull the cylinder away from the brake support plate. At installation, apply a new O-ring to the matching surface of the wheel cylinder and the brake support plate, place the wheel cylinder securely to the assembly and tighten the bolts to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.). Add the rear brake flex hose tube to the wheel cylinder at the brake pedal end and tighten the tube nut to 17 Nm or 145 inch lbs. Install the shoes on the rear brake support plate, then replace them when needed and finally place the rear brake drum onto the rear hub. Put the tire and wheel assembly back in place and tighten the nuts holding the wheels to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Then, take care of the rear brakes. Adjust the height of the vehicle, replace the brake pedal holder, vacuum the wheel cylinder and test the brakes on the road.
