2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the rack and pinion, lock the steering wheel and drain the power steering fluid from the holder. Elevate the vehicle and unbolt the pinch bolt from the rack and pinion and afterward, take off and discard the power steering hoses. After that, unmount the whole tire and wheel, then undo the tie rod end nuts with Special tool 8677 in order to free the tie rod ends from the knuckles. After removing the skid plate and the rack and pinion mounting bolts, take the rack and pinion out from the vehicle. Go through the bushings and change any that have become worn or damaged before you put in your new parts. Secure the rack and pinion to the front crossmember and tighten the bolts until they reach 319 Nm (235 ft. lbs.). Put the shaft coupler on the rack and pinion, add a new pinch bolt and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). After cleaning and drying the tie rod end studs and the inner part of the knuckles, install the tie rod ends, tightening the nuts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Fix the power steering hose to the rack and pinion, then tighten it to 32 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Attach the return power steering hose and tighten that to 71 Nm (52 ft. lbs.). After reinstalling the skid plate and wheel, take off the support and allow the truck to lower. Next, insert the fluid and align the toe mechanics before you go.
