2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Place a jack under the lower suspension arm for support and raise the vehicle on the outsides before starting a service or repair of the steering knuckle. Disconnect the tire and wheel, the disc brake caliper and rotor and the shield protecting the rotor once it comes off. After that, take out the wheel speed sensor and unhook the tie rod from the steering knuckle arm. Separate the upper and lower ball joints from the steering knuckle by pulling out cotter pins and nuts with Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A; sometimes you'll need to strike the knuckle with a hammer. With the tool out of place, get the steering knuckle assembly, fasten it in the vise and sever the steering arm. Installation involves securing the steering knuckle in a clamp, linking the steering arm and applying LD 5/8 nut torque of 294 Nm (217 ft. lbs.) and HD 3/4 nut torque of 330 Nm (225 ft. lbs.). Secure the steering knuckle between the upper and lower ball joints, add nuts and tighten the upper nut to 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.). Then slide new cotter pins into the holes. For the LD 11/16 nut, use 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.) and for the HD 3/4 nut, you should use 237 Nm (175 ft. lbs.). Replace the wheel speed sensor, secure the brake rotor dust shield with brackets fastened to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and fit the rotor and caliper. Now, attach the tie rod to the steering knuckle arm, fit the wheel and tire onto the studs, lower the car and look at the wheel alignment.
