2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service the upper ball joint on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: First, put a jack under the outer end of the lower suspension arm and raise and support the car once the vehicle is supported you can proceed to service the upper ball joint. Open the door, then lift out the wheel/tire unit and disconnect the disc brake caliper and wheel speed sensor. Support the lower control arm, unbolt the cotter pins from inside the ball joints and detach the nuts. Fit the Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A inside, turn the threaded end to apply pressure to the upper ball joint and strike the knuckle with a hammer if what remains is being stubborn. Take out C-3561 to remove the ball joint from the suspension arm. Fit the ball joint in place using Tool C-3561 and tighten it so its torque reads 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.), making the gap between the joint hex and the bore on the suspension arm 0.25 - 1.25 mm (0.01 - 0.05 inch) wide. Secure a new seal on the ball joint and after that, install the steering knuckle onto the upper ball joint. Mount the upper ball joint sockets with a tightened nut set to 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.) and then install new cotter pins. Replace the wheel speed sensor, the disc brake caliper and the wheel and tire assembly before you lower the vehicle. Don't forget to check how the front wheel is aligned.
