2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair rear Coil Springs on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: When servicing or repairing the rear coil spring, first jack up the vehicle under the frame rail crossmember beyond the rear axle so you don't bend the side rail flange. Jack up the car at the frame and rely on a hydraulic jack to release the strain from the axle. Remove the combination of the wheel and tire from the suspension, then take off the U-bolt nuts, spring plate, U-bolts and the seat. After that, undo the nut and bolt from the shackle mounting bracket, from the front spring eye and remove the spring from the vehicle. Take out the nut and bolt holding the rear spring eye to remove the shackle. Place the spring shackle on the rear spring eye and fasten it with a screw which you tighten only by hand. Insert the spring center bolt into the pad's locating hole with the spring resting on the axle pad. Put the spring eye into the bolt hole in the rail front bracket, add the spring eye bolt and nut and tighten just enough so it doesn't spin when you lift the rail. Put the shackle eye from the spring into the matching hole in the shackle bracket, fit the bolt and nut and turn it by hand so the rear spring eye remains above the shackle bracket bolt. Place the spring seat, U-bolts, spring plate and nuts on your seat and use a torque wrench to tighten the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.). After that, lift the vehicle, reinstall the wheel and tire assembly and remove the support stands. The front spring eye nut should be tightened to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) and the shackle nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
