2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel hub and bearing on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: A preliminary step for working with the wheel hub and bearing is to raise the vehicle, remove the wheel and tire and then the disc brake caliper. After that, take away the dust cap, cotter pin, nut lock, nut and washer from the spindle and very carefully slide the hub/rotor off the spindle so the inner wheel bearing and seal avoid touching the spindle threads. Separate the seal and inner bearing wheel from the hub/rotor, then drive out the bearing cups by using a pin punch on them. When installing, fit the bearing cups with an appropriate sized driver, grease the inside of the hub with new wheel bearing grease, clean and add grease to the wheel bearings you removed and secure the inner bearing and new seal together. Watch for any spindle burrs or roughness and fix them, then put on some lubricant. Place the hub/rotor on the spindle and after that, put the outer wheel bearing, washer and retaining nut in place. Twist the nut until you reach 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and while the hub/rotor moves, adjust the preload torque on the bearings. Near the end, screw the nut to 3 Nm (25 in. lb.), add the nut lock and cotter pin and make sure the end play is 0.25 - 0.076 mm (0.001 - 0.003 inch). Dust the cap, add a small amount of lubricant inside it and put back the cap. First, install the disc brake caliper, then the wheel and tire and finally lower the vehicle.
