  A: To prevent the air bag system from mistakenly deploying and harming you, make sure to cut the battery negative cable and wait two minutes while the capacitor is discharged before starting any work on the steering wheel, column or instrument panel on vehicles with air bags. Before taking out the control assembly, disconnect the battery negative cable and unplug the harness with the AC-heater control on the underside of the instrument panel, close to the driver's side of the floor panel and transmission tunnel. After that, take out the retainer on the a/c heater control half of the vacuum harness from the center distribution duct, pull out the cluster bezel from the instrument panel and remove the four screws fastening the a/c heater control to the panel. Release the a/c heater control assembly from the instrument panel, remove the wire harness connector and when necessary, unplug the heated mirror wire harness connector. Attach the wire harness connector(s) to the receptacles on the a/c heater control, place the HVAC vacuum harness through the hole in the reinforcement below the a/c heater opening, insert the a/c heater control into the instrument panel and fasten it with four 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) screws. After installing the cluster bezel, reach under the instrument panel and snap the a/c heater control vacuum harness retainer into place near the center distribution duct, link the two parts of the a/c heater control harness to the HVAC housing connector and finish by connecting the battery's negative cable again.
