2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Lash Adjuster on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Begin the servicing of the lifter/lash adjuster by getting rid of the camshaft. Put the camshaft cap onto the open end of the tool placed carefully into the camshaft bore. Take off the rubber band from one cylinder by sliding it away, then put the other tappet dowel onto that pair of pistons. Lift the dowel rod, so it releases the tappet and the tappet settles into the trough below. Be sure to take out both the tappet and trough, making sure not to rotate anything and mark the tappet if you will not replace it. Put in the remaining tappets and proceed as you did before with each trough. Use a proper solvent to clean each tappet, rinse them in hot water and dry them with a fresh, clean shop rag or compressed air. Review the tappet, tappet socket, stem, face for any damage, crack or too much wearing and note the stem's diameter. Then, replace the stem if it is smaller than the minimum-required diameter. To install the trough again, put it into the camshaft bore, so that the cap end goes in and the open side points towards the top. Insert the installation tool down the push rod hole towards the trough, remove it with the bait hook, apply clean engine oil and set the tappet onto the tool. Move the tappet upwards into its position and if necessary wiggle the trough to help it fit into the tappet bore. After everything is positioned, swing the trough one half turn so the open edge is below, take out the tappet setup tool, insert a rubber-banded dowel rod, rotate the trough again and set up the other tappets.
