How to Service and Repair the Axle Shaft of the 226RBA on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Before servicing or fixing the rear axle of the 226RBA, set the vehicle in neutral and put it on a support stand. Open the wheel and tire assembly, take out the brake caliper and rotor. After that, remove the nuts holding the axle retainer plate to the axle tube on the rear face of the axle flange. Attach Slide Hammer 7420 and Adapter 6790 to the axle, with the adapter bolted with lug nuts and use the hammer to remove the shaft from the axle. The installation starts by sliding the axle into the axle tube, with the flat end of the retainer plate upwards. After that, put the studs of the retaining plate into the brake backing plate and flange of the axle tube. Screw in the retainer nuts by hand so the final tightening torque reads 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and reconnect the caliper and brake rotor once the retainer nuts are tight. At last, attach the tire and wheel, pour and check the differential with gear oil, then lower the car.
