How to Service the Axle Shaft of the 226RBA on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Place the transmission in neutral, jack up the back of the 226RBA and support it before proceeding. Take out both the wheel and tire and then take out the brake caliper and rotor. Afterward, remove the nuts holding the axle retainer plate to the axle tube from the edge of the axle flange at the rear. Use Slide Hammer 7420 and Puller 6790, mount the adapter to the axle with lug nuts and note that the axle bearing race is usually loose in the axle tube. Put your axle into the axle tube so the flat surface of the retainer plate faces up. After that, insert the brake backing plate studs into the retainer plate and flange on the axle tube. Secure the nuts that hold the click track bolts in place and tighten each one to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Put in the brake rotor and caliper, then install the wheel and tire. Remember to add gear lubricant to the differential, after which you should lower the vehicle.
