2002 Jeep Liberty Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Axle Shaft of the 198RBI on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, put the transmission into neutral and raise the vehicle before servicing the 198RBI's rear axle shaft. First, take off the wheel and tire and then remove the brake drum. After that, take out the axle retainer plate nuts at the rear of the axle flange. Pull the axle shaft out of the axle using Slide Hammer 7420 and Adapter 6790 after you have mounted the adapter using lug nuts, since the bearing race may come loose in the axle tube. While installing, push the axle into the axle tube with the flat part of the retainer plate up. Insert the retaining plate studs into space between the brake backing plate and axle tube flange, adding in the retainer nuts and tightening to 47 - 75 Nm (35 - 55 ft. lbs.). Once done, put back the wheel, tire and brake drum. After that, apply differential lubricant and lower the vehicle.
