2002 Jeep Liberty Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before servicing the steering knuckle, lift the vehicle, remove the wheel and tire assembly, the caliper adapter and always hold the brake caliper while removing its parts to keep the brake hose safe. After that, get rid of the disc brake rotor, wheel speed sensor and the axle shaft nut (for four-wheel drive), then remove the hub/bearing. After that, remove the lower ball joint nut which can be done with tool C-4150A and remove the outer tie rod end. After lifting the wheel assembly, separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle with C-4150A and remove the nut off the top ball joint. Put the knuckle onto the vehicle first, then connect the upper ball joint nut and tighten it to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.), connect the lower ball joint nut afterward and do the same. After that, insert the outer tie rod end, bearing/hub and axle shaft nut and tighten the nut to 135 Nm (96 ft. lbs.) if your vehicle is four-wheel drive. Afterward, attach the wheel speed sensor, disc brake rotor, caliper adapter and tire and wheel assembly and complete the set toe procedure.
