2002 Jeep Liberty Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings and Seals on a 198RBI Rear Axle on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first step in repairing and servicing rear axle bearings and seals on a 198RBI is removing the axle shaft from the vehicle. Using a 3/8 inch drill bit, drill only slightly into the soft steel axle bearing retaining ring and stop when you feel the drill hitting the bottom of the hole, so as not to mark the axle. Take a cold chisel and chisel across the hole you drilled, then lift the retaining ring off the axle shaft. Pull the axle bearing from the shaft using Press & Splitter 1130, then extract the seal and retaining plate. Make sure the axle shaft retaining plate is level and flat against a straight edge before you install it; otherwise, get a new plate. Put the retaining plate on the axle shaft, spread some multi-purpose grease around the edge of the seal and set the seal so its cavity is furthest from the retaining plate. Add Mopar Wheel Bearing Grease or an alternative to the bearing, clear off any extra grease and use the 7913 futurehub/Installer to set the bearing on the axle shaft. With Installer 7913 and a press, attach the retaining ring to the axle shaft and then put the axle back into your vehicle.
