2003 Dodge Dakota Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Alternator on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: It's necessary to remove the negative battery cable before servicing or repairing the alternator to protect yourself and the electrical system. Replace the drive belt using the cooling system procedures. Open the cover over the B+ cable port to remove it from the mounting screw. To work on 3.9L/5.9L engines, remove the bolts or nuts holding the generator pivot and generator brackets and place the generator where it's easy to access the connector wires. To access the wire connectors on the 4.7L engine, remove the three generator bolts and set the generator so that you reach them. Slide out the R terminal on the near end of the generator and unbolt the nut holding the B+ terminal. Push down on the tab and pull the field wire connector out of the rear of the generator, then lift out the generator from the vehicle. To install the generator, match it with the engine and insert the field wire connector to the back of the generator. Slide the B+ terminal onto the generator mounting stud, then tighten its mounting nut to 12 Nm (108 in. lbs.). Wind the generator mounting screws into place and tighten them as follows: for the 3.9L/5.9L engines, set the generator mount and pivot bolt/nut at 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and for the 4.7L engine tighten the vertical mounting bolt to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), the long horizontal mounting bolt to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and the short horizontal mounting bolt to 74 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Never insert a screwdriver under the rim of a pulley to push the belt onto it, so you don't harm the synthetic material. Make sure the serpentine accessory drive belt is placed correctly to ensure the water pump turns the proper way and avoids engine overheating. Put on the generator drive belt using the steps in the cooling system instructions. Carefully put the cable cover over the mounting stud on the B+, followed by connecting the negative battery cable.
