2002 Dodge Dakota Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace an Alternator on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before beginning, first disconnect the negative battery cable so nothing gets ruined while you replace the alternator. Disconnect the generator drive belt and take the plastic cable protector off the B+ mounting stud. When working with 2.5L, 3.9L and 5.9L engines, get rid of the generator pivot and mounting bolts or nut, then move the generator so the wire connectors are open. To work on the 4.7L engine, take out the three bolts holding the generator in place and place it so access to the wire connectors is easy. After that, unscrew the B+ terminal mounting nut at the back of the generator and take the terminal off. Push down on the tab found on the field wire connector and pull it out of the generator and then remove the generator from your car. First, place the generator by the engine and snap the wire connector onto the back of the generator. Screw the B+ terminal onto the generator's mounting stud, then tighten the nut to 12 Nm (108 in. lbs.). Tighten the generator mounting fasteners to the given torque: the 2.5L engine requires 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) for generator and pivot bolts, 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) for the 3.9L and 5.9L engines and 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) for the 2.5L engine; for the 4.7L engine, use 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) for the main vertical mounting bolt Take care not to pinch the belt over the pulley with a screwdriver because this might damage the fibers and, moreover, your water pump will not function properly if routed incorrectly which can result in engine overheating. After that, connect the drive belt to the generator, attach the cable cover to the B+ stud and return the negative battery cable to the connector on the frame.
