2003 Dodge Dakota Brake Disc Parts and Q&A
Q: Can a Scored or Worn Brake Disc Be Machined on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: When the disc brake disc is worn or scored it can be repaired by machining it on a lathe that can cut both sides at the same time. It is important to clean the mounting surface on the lathe before using it, otherwise a tapered disc could result, if the machine only machines on one side. On-vehicle lathes are preferred, since they match the disc properly to the hub/bearing. If a disc does not meet the required minimum thickness, it should be replaced, both prior to and after being machined. Drum lathes can be used to machine the brake drum in a hat disc when required, with the initial machining limited to no more than 0.12 - 0.20 mm (0.005 - 0.008 inch). A finish cut of 0.025 to 0.038 mm (0.001 to 0.0015 inch) makes the best final surface. Make sure the drum is tightly in place, with a damper strap wrapped around it to prevent vibration and remove the chance of hammer marks. Cast onto or stamped into the drum braking surface is the maximum diameter it should not exceed, so if machining goes beyond this limit it must be replaced.
