2003 Dodge Dakota CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Inner CV Boot and CV Joint on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: To do this, hold the shaft with soft jaws in a vise, then support the CV joint during the process. Using a cut-off wheel or grinder, remove the clamps but be sure to avoid damaging the ON housing or half shaft. After that, take off the housing from the half shaft and push the boot over around it. Take the housing bushing out of the housing and the tripod snap ring, then pull out the tripod and boot from the half shaft. Look over all parts of the CV manually for any damage or excessive wear and replace only the whole tripod if something is wrong. To put the boot in place, slide it down the shaft and then add the tripod and snap on the shaft. Place the supplied grease into the housing and boot and apply it all over the tripod. Put a new bushing inside the housing, add the tripod and shaft to the housing and place the boot back where it was, without twisting it and removing any extra air. Lastly, fit both boot clamps into the frame using Clamp Installer C-4975A and turn the tool until it is tight and the clamp is shut over both boots.
