2003 Dodge Durango Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve Seats Be Reworked to Ensure Proper Alignment on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: Worn or damaged valve seats can be restored, but only if the engine's angle and seat width are correct; if not, you need to replace the cylinder head. To have stones form a true and complete surface, the valve guide pilot must be the correct size when you are refacing valves and seats. Measuring the valve seat center with an appropriate dial indicator, be sure the total run out is not more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). After that, slightly paint Prussian blue on the valve seat and insert the valve into the cylinder head. Make some light pressure and rotate it while maintaining contact. When the valve is out, look at the valve face; if blue is below the top edge, lower the valve seat with a 15 degree stone; if it's at the bottom edge, increase the height of the valve seat using a 65 degree stone. The intake seat's width needs to be between 1.75 - 2.36 mm (0.0689 - 0.0928 inch) once the seat is proper and the exhaust seat's width should be between 1.71 - 2.32 mm (0.0673 - 0.0911 inch). After refacing the valve and seat, measure the spring installed height for each valve, since it should not go above 41.44 mm (1.6315 inch) for both. Be sure that both the valve seat and valve face have a face angle of 44.5-45.
