2003 Dodge Durango Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rocker Arm Assembly on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: Service and repairing the rocker arm assembly is best done after disconnecting the negative end of the battery cable, to avoid starter engagement. Remove the cover on the cylinder head. To remove the rocker arm from cylinders 3 and 5, rotate the crank until cylinder # 1 is at the TDC exhaust stroke. On cylinders 2 and 8, turn the crankshaft until cylinder group # 1 reaches the compression stroke. For these two cylinders, turn the crankshaft until the piston in cylinder # 3 is fully compressed. For the first and seventh cylinders, crank the engine until cylinder # 2 hits its top compression position. Press downward on the valve spring with tool 8516 Rocker Arm Remover in order to take out the rocker arm. The concave part of the rocker arm should always face the lash adjusters to prevent major damage. Before installation, dip the rocker arms into engine oil and coat both sides. When installing rocker arms on cylinders 3 and 5, turn the crankshaft until cylinder # 1 is in its fully closed exhaust position. Rotate the crankshaft for both cylinders 2 and 8 until cylinder # 1 reaches its compression TDC. Move the crankshaft until cylinder # 3 has the TDC position for compression stroke for cylinders 4 and 6. Cylinders 1 and 7 are timed to run when cylinder # 2 is at its TDC compression stroke. Press the valve spring down with special tool 8516 and set the new rocker arm in place. After all of that, set the cylinder head cover in place.
