2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace the Air Bag Trim Cover and Horn Switch Unit on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To handle this job, first remove the battery negative cable, then wait two minutes for the capacitor in the car to empty. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and lay it on a good surface, facing the cover downward. Pull out of the routing slots the horn switch pigtail wires from the upper locking block of the trim cover, loosen the nut and washer on the ground pigtail wire terminal and take it off the upper left stud on the driver air bag housing. Pull up the driver air bag unit to ensure metal shavings stay out of the cushion, then use a number 7 drill bit to loosen each of the three flanged heads that hold the trim cover to the air bag housing. Disengage the tabs attached to the trim cover from the shank of each blind rivet, move the metal air bag housing downwards into the trim cover receptacle and spin the air bag housing and cushion to remove it. Remove the cover and switch unit from where the trim cover was and then cut away the rest of the aluminum shank in each blind rivet. Replace the air bag trim cover and horn switch by buying a new assembly set, while making sure you use the correct blind rivets. Put the trim cover down with the air bag receptacle up and insert one side of the housing into the receptacle. After that, fasten the hooks on both sides of the air bag housing. Connect the horn switch pigtail wires under the driver air bag housing and trim cover and then drop the metal air bag housing into the trim cover to secure the locking tabs. Match the rivet tabs in the air bag housing to the trim cover holes, then insert three rivets, use an appropriate tool and position the horn switch ground wire nail on the upper left inflator stud. Once everything is wired up, attach the washer and nut to secure the horn switch ground pigtail wire eyelet terminal to the inflator stud, tighten until the torque is reached, fit the horn switch pigtail wires into the routing slots and reinstall the driver air bag onto the steering wheel.
