2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Knock Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Knock Sensor in the Cylinder Block on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Both sensors are screwed into the cylinder block below the intake manifold. You can tell the left sensor by its identification tag (LEFT) and a bigger bolt head. The PCM relies on knowing where each sensor is, so ensure that you don't mistakenly place them on the opposite side. Before pulling out the sensors, disconnect the knock sensor dual pigtail harness from the engine wire harness positioned in the rear. After that, take off the intake manifold and unscrew the sensor mounting bolts, as the foam piece on the bolts isn't to seal the sensors; avoid applying any type of adhesive or sealant to these bolts. When you have removed the sensors from the engine, make sure to clean the holes on the cylinder block where the knock sensors will go. It is necessary to tighten the sensor mounting bolts neither too much nor too little; when using an 8mm bolt, set the torque as specified in the manual which is not very high. After tightening all the mounting bolts to the correct level, fit the intake manifold back into place and join the knock sensor wiring harness to the rear of the intake manifold.
