2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil from a Spark Plug on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To the top of the engine's intake manifold, the mounting stud and nut hold each individual ignition coil in place as it fits into the machined hole on the cylinder head. A rubber boot at the base of the coil covers and seals the spark plug, with a spring also placed inside for mechanical contact; both the spring and rubber boot belong permanently to the coil. A seal at the top of the cylinder, known as an O-ring, keeps the coil in place. A coil can be taken out after you detach the throttle body air intake tube or intake box. Pushing down on the release lock and pulling the electrical connector away from the coil will disconnect it. Purchase a small can of compressed air on Amazon and use it to blast the area around the coil before you take it out. Take off the stud nut and draw the coil from the cylinder head by twisting it slightly. To install, air-clean the tops of the spark plugs and verify that the spark coil's O-ring is in good condition. Change it if it appears worn. Spread some silicone on the O-ring, making it easier to install and put the coil into the cylinder head hole while pushing the spark plug in and steering the coil's base which is held by a stud, into place. Tighten the stud nut for the coil according to the instructions and fit the electrical connector into its place by snapping it in. Replace the throttle body air tube if this is required.
