2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Before you start working on the valve, first take out the cylinder head. Use tool MD-998772A and adapter 6716A to squash the valve springs, remove the valve retaining locks, valve spring retainers, valve stem seals and the valve springs. Before pulling the valves, clean out any burrs found in their lock grooves and be sure to label the valves so they are put back in the same place during assembly. Illclean the valves properly and take out those that are burned, shaped oddly or cracked. Eliminate carbon and varnish from inside your valve guides using a good valve guide cleaner. Measure the valve stems; if the wear is more than 0.051 mm (0.002 in.), change the valve. Now apply a small amount of oil to the valve stems and fit them into the cylinder head. Should valve stem height be too low after seat renewal, replace the cylinder head. After you install new seals, place the valve springs and valve retainers. Place the pressure onto the valve springs with MD-998772A and the adapter 6716A, fit the locks and remove the tool. When valves or seats are ground, measure the rise of the spring from the base of the seat in the cylinder head to the base of the spring retainer at the bottom. If using spacers, place the tape from the top of the spacer. Should the spring height be longer than 42.86 mm (1-11/16 in.), place a 1.587 mm (1/16 in.) spacer in the back of the valve counterbore to restore its height to between 41.27 and 42.86 mm (1-5/8 to 1-11/16 in.). Set the cylinder head into place as your last action.
