2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Shock Absorber in an Independent Front Suspension on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To fix the independent front suspension's shock absorber, lift the car and then hold up the outboard end of the lower control arm. Take the upper shock absorber nut out, then the retainer and grommet and then remove the two lower nuts to detach the shock. For installation, if the upper shock nut is missing, replace it or if it's present, seal it with Mopar Lock 'N Seal or Loctite 242. The first step is putting the lower retainer and grommet on the stud in the shock absorber, then sliding the shock absorber through the hole in the frame bracket. Set the lower nuts, tighten them until you reach 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) of force. After that, add the upper grommet, fit the retainer in place and attach the new nut or coat the original nut with Mopar Lock 'N Seal or Loctite 242, tightening everything to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Take out the support at the lower control arm end near where it connects to the outboard end and then lower the vehicle.
