How to Service the Axle Shaft of the 198RBI on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

First apply the parking brake and shif the transmission into neutral, then lift the vehicle to have it better supported. Taking down the wheel and tire first and afterward disconnecting the brake caliper and rotor should follow. Afterward, remove the nuts connecting the axle retainer plate to the axle tube from the back of the flange. Attach Slide Hammer 7420 and Adapter 6790 to the axle and pull the shaft out with the adapter in place. Also, check that the axle bearing race is loose in the axle as you pull the shaft. With the flat end of the retainer plate against the tube, push the axle into place. After, insert the retaining plate studs into both the brake backing plate and the axle tube flange. Tighten both retainer nuts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and put the brake rotor and caliper in their original position. After that, attach the wheel and tire, add gear lubricant to the differential and lift the vehicle back into place.
